Make Up Bag Makeover
If you’re a make-up junkie like me, you will have a make-up drawer full of products that you haven’t used in a long time, or have only used once. For some reason we can’t bear to throw out that super-trendy lipstick colour we bought last season and still haven’t figured out how to wear. The chances are if you haven’t used it within a year, you are most likely never going to use it.
Remember that most make-up items have expiry dates, so it is in your skin’s best interest to only use fresh make-up. Discard any items that smell funny, look old, have changed colour, or have separated. Especially anything that has had fingers dipped in it, like cream blushers or lip gloss, as these can harbour all kinds of germs that can lead to spots and rashes!
Mascara should be replaced every 3 to 6 months. Mascara is the make-up item with the shortest shelf life and using an old mascara can lead to eye infections.
Water-based foundations tend to last about 1 year, while other foundations, like oil-based, can last up to 18 months. Concealer can last for up to 1 year. Eyeliner pencils can last for up to 3 years, although you must remember to sharpen them regularly. Lipstick expiry dates vary, so use the ‘smell’ test on them, but if they look or smell old, or they have been used by other people, then throw them away. Face powders and eye shadows have a fairly long shelf life and can last up to 3 years. Make-up brushes can last for years, but you must wash them often. Make-up sponges should be washed after each use and changed regularly to avoid germs building up in them. Try never to share make-up, if you can avoid it, as viruses, such as cold sores (Herpes), can be spread this way.
Finally, start organising your make-up into separate sections. Try using plastic containers that fit into your drawers, or use boxes and baskets. Use cups for your brushes and pencils. Ziploc bags are also a great, inexpensive way to store your make-up.
Only carry the bare minimum of touch-up products in your handbag. You do not want to struggle all day carrying a heavy make-up bag, just to touch-up your lippy.
Follow these guidelines, and you will find that your new and improved make-up drawer and bag will make your make-up routine more fun, and easier to manage in the mornings.
